We are deeply saddened by the news of the death of Ray Barra. The former Principal Dancer in John Cranko's time has died at the age of 95.

Ray Barra was born in 1930 to Spanish parents in San Francisco, USA, where he was initially trained. He danced with the San Francisco Opera Ballet, the American Ballet Theatre and from 1958 to 1966 as a soloist with the Stuttgart Ballet. He was seen worldwide in a large number of leading roles, several of which John Cranko had created especially for him, such as Romeo, Onegin and the Princes in Swan Lake and The Firebird. He later worked as a choreographer in various cities and as a ballet master in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Vienna and Munich. From 1986 to 1987 he was director of the Ballet Nacional Clásico in Madrid and from 1994 to 1996 ballet director of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He lived in Spain, where his roots lie, until his death.

Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Ray Barra, he will forever be an important part of the history of the Stuttgart Ballet.
